Origin and history

Merval Castle, located in Brémontier-Merval in the Seine-Maritime department, is an emblematic 17th century monument. Ranked at the Historic Monuments in 1943 for its facades, roofs, orangery, stables and dovecote, it is considered one of the "wonders" of the country of Bray. The estate, now owned by the Normandy region, houses an agricultural farm, a cider shop and an agricultural high school, while remaining open to the public.

The commune of Brémontier-Merval, formed in 1823 by the merger of the communes of Brémontier and Merval, and then Bellozanne in 1826, has a rich religious background. From the Merovingian era, the site housed a religious community. In the 12th century, Hugues V de Gournay founded the Abbey of Bellozanne, entrusted to the pre-monstrates. This abbey, visited by kings like Philip the Hardi and Charles IV, declined after the Hundred Years' War before being dissolved in 1790.

The castle of Merval, with its park classified in 1942, illustrates the architectural and agricultural heritage of the region. Its dovecote and its conservatory orchard bear witness to an ever-living agricultural tradition. The estate, open all year round, combines heritage preservation and educational activities, thus embodying the historical and modern duality of the country of Bray.
