Origin and history
Mirabel Castle, located in Riom in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, is a building built at the beginning of the seventeenth century, then profoundly redesigned in the last third of the eighteenth century. In particular, this overhaul added a wing of apartments, visible by a Louis XVI-style facade, while retaining a large part of the old carpentry. The interior houses rooms decorated in 17th and 18th century styles, including a vaulted dining room decorated with murals and a fireplace depicting Philémon and Baucis.
The castle park, which is more than 90 metres long, is bordered by groves and ends with a gap in the river. It offers an unobstructed view of the castle from the departmental road 2029. The estate also includes a wing of the commons, built in the Louis XVI style, which extends the main body southward. Although the castle is a private property, its facades, roofs and some interior rooms (such as the vaulted hall and panelled lounges) have been protected since 1989.
The history of the castle is documented in local works, such as that of Henri Peuchot (1989), which traces the evolution of the monument and its owners. The castle thus illustrates the architectural transformations between 17th century classicism and Louis XVI elegance, while remaining anchored in the historical landscape of Riom and its region. Its listing in the Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance, although it is not open to the public on a regular basis.
