Origin and history

Mirabel Castle is a private building located in the commune of Riom, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the early seventeenth century, it underwent significant transformations in the last third of the eighteenth century. Its architecture and park, more than 90 metres long and bordered by groves, make it a remarkable example of aristocratic property of that time. The park, crossed by the Mirabel Creek, ends with a wolf jumping ditch, offering an open perspective since the departmental road 2029.

The castle was partially listed as a historical monument by a decree of 20 April 1989, thus recognizing its heritage value. Although details of its historic owners are scarce, a study entitled "History of Mirabel and its owners", written in 1989 by Henri Peuchot, former secretary general of Merck Sharp and Dohme-Chibret laboratories, offers a documented insight into its past. Today, the castle remains a private property, preserving its historical character and landscape.

The monument is part of a regional context marked by a rich architectural history, as evidenced by the numerous lists of castles and classical monuments of Puy-de-Dôme. Its inscription among the historic monuments of Riom underlines its local importance, while linking it to a wider heritage, including similar buildings in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
