Origin and history
Moleon Castle was originally built in the 15th century, a period of which today an octagonal square-based tower and a western wing flanked by a round tower remain. These primitive elements, characteristic of medieval defensive constructions, bear witness to a first phase of fortification typical of the Sologne. The building, although originally modest, laid the foundations for further development marked by successive enlargements.
In the 17th century, the castle underwent a major transformation campaign, with the addition of a house body parallel to the original building, accompanied by a pavilion in return for square. These additions, in a more residential style, reflected the evolution of seigneurial needs, moving from a purely defensive function to an aristocratic residence role. A fireplace in the dining room, dated from that time, is now protected under the Historical Monuments.
The 19th-century works gave the castle its present appearance, with the integration of a new building adjacent to the old house body, masked by a corbelling scald. This period also saw the reconstruction of the communes, replacing destroyed dependencies, and the addition of a north-east tower at the beginning of the twentieth century. The ensemble, in red brick, perfectly illustrates the architecture of solognot castles, mixing medieval heritage and modern adaptations.
Moleon Castle was partially classified as a Historic Monument in 1985, with protection covering the facades and roofs of the oldest parts (XV and XVII centuries), as well as remarkable interior elements such as the 17th century chimney. This recognition underscores the heritage value of a building that spans five centuries of history, while maintaining tangible traces of each era.
