Origin and history

The castle of Montaigut, built in the 10th century on a rocky spur overlooking the Dourdou Valley of Camares, was originally a guard tower protecting Saint-Affrique from attacks from the south. Built on an ancient Upper Middle Ages necropolis, it symbolized local defence before becoming a fortified residence.

In the 15th century, the Blanc family enlarged and transformed the castle into a seigneurial residence, adding architectural elements such as scauguettes, Gothic fireplaces and vaulted rooms. These changes reflect the evolution of its role from military defence to aristocratic housing.

The 17th century marked a new phase under the property of the bourgeois of Rouvelet: the interior walls were plastered, the defensive system was dismantled, and a lauze roof was installed. These changes illustrate the adaptation of the castle to the lifestyles of the time, far from its original war vocation.

Abandoned in the 19th century, the castle served as a refuge for local peasants before being looted for its materials in the 1920s. It fell into ruins until 1968, when the association Les Amis du château de Montaigut became its owner and began its restoration, permanently saving the site in 1989. Registered as a historical monument in 1987, it is now a place of cultural entertainment.

The architecture of the castle combines medieval remains (cell, cistern, guard room) and additions of the 15th and 17th centuries, such as stables, the 19th century forge, or baroque gypseries. Its spiral staircase and vaulted rooms testify to its evolution through the ages.
