Origin and history
The Château de Montaigut-le-Blanc, located in the Puy-de-Dôme in Montaigut-le-Blanc, is a historical monument dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries. He was the cradle of the Montaigut family, a local noble lineage. The current remains include courtine remains with several towers to the east, as well as a large inner courtyard. Some of the castle's materials were reportedly reused to build the neighbouring hamlet of the Cross du Bois, reflecting its past importance in the planning of the area.
Ranked a Historic Monument since 1889, the castle is now in ruins, with protected elements such as the remains of its fortifications. The property is shared between private hands and the municipality. Although its present state does not allow it to visit freely, its history remains linked to the feudal organization of the region, where the castles served as centres of power, defence and seigneurial life. These buildings played a key role in structuring rural areas, as in Auvergne, where agriculture and livestock dominated the medieval economy.
