Origin and history

The Château de Montbillon is a 17th and 19th century building located in the commune of Saint-Sornin, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is distinguished by its architecture, including a chapel and a dovecote, as well as by its courtyard with panoramic views of the village of Saint-Sornin. The estate initially extended to the Lion Pond, now located in the nearby commune of Rocles, highlighting its historical agricultural importance.

Among the former owners, the Thonier family marked the history of the castle, notably Claude-Antoine Thonier de Villiers de Montbillon (1767–54), a health officer in Saint-Sornin after studying medicine in Montpellier. Son of Gilbert Thonier and Marie-Jeanne Foucault, in 1795 he married Marie-Jeanne Michelon, daughter of a member of the National Assembly, illustrating the castle's ties to the local elites of the time.

The architectural ensemble, with its harmonious volumes and bell tower, is considered one of the most notable of Saint-Sornin. Its history reflects both the built heritage of Allier and the social dynamics of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, between seigneurial heritage and modern transformations.
