Origin and history

Montbriand Castle, located in Messimy-sur-Saône in the department of Ain, has its origins in a medieval fief named Mondemangue, first mentioned in 1403. This site, probably much older, was transformed in 1690 by J. Leviste de Briandas, who erected a Renaissance-style castle on the site of an old strong house. The Leviste family of Briandas, who owned the site for centuries, associated its name with it in 1756 when Daniel Leviste de Briandas obtained Montbrian's birth in the county.

The adjacent chapel, dedicated to Saint Francis de Sales, was built in 1749 and blessed the following year by the Reverend Father Étienne Cholier. In 1750, a cooler was also built by the mason Gaiard, first fed in January 1751 with ice taken from a nearby pond. These elements, as well as the moat and access portal, demonstrate the architectural and historical importance of the estate.

Ranked a historic monument in 1989, the Château de Montbriand embodies the heritage of the local nobility and its evolution throughout the centuries. Its inscription covers not only the main building, but also the courtyard of honour, the eastern moats, the gate and the chapel. The ruins of the cooler, still visible, recall the technical innovations of the time, while the whole reflects the prestige of the Leviste de Briandas, an influential family in the region and beyond.

The available sources, including references to Mr Gelas and to the departmental archives, highlight the territorial anchoring of the castle, linked to the history of Messimy-sur-Saône and the former Dombes province. Its architecture, combining Renaissance and 18th century additions, makes it a remarkable example of the castral heritage of Ain, now preserved for future generations.
