Origin and history

The castle of Montcabrières is part of a set of six small fortresses built around Ambialet, in the present Occitanie region. These works, now in ruins, formed a defensive enclosure protecting the viscount of Ambialet, then in the hands of the Trencavels family. Located on the ridges between the Old Castle and the Priory of the Oder, these fortifications served as strategic points for controlling access to the city, divided into three independently fortified districts. The ramparts, with slotted towers and mâchicoulis, testify to their major military role.

The Château de Montcabrières occupied one of the highest rocks dominant Ambialet, thus participating in the overall defense of the site. Like most of the forts of the region, it was destroyed in 1568 by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion, before being abandoned. Its strategic location, overlooking the valleys, reflects medieval fortification techniques adapted to steep relief. No specific information remains on its construction or occupants, except its integration into the local defensive system.

The remains of the forts of Ambialet, including Montcabrières, recall the historical importance of this medieval city, a crossroads of powers between Viscounts, noble families like the Castelpers (present in the church of Notre-Dame de la Capelle), and religious communities. Their destruction in the 16th century marked a turning point in the region's military history, linked to the religious conflicts that shook southern France. Today, these ruins offer a silent testimony of past struggles and feudal organization in Occitanie.
