Origin and history

The Château de Montivert, located in the commune of Saint-André-en-Vivarais in Ardèche, has its origins in the 13th century with a first strong house composed of a central body and two dungeons. This strategic site, located at 1,070 metres above sea level at the edge of the Haute-Loire, was occupied by several noble families, including the Iserdand, Montaignac and Vire du Liron, who made successive changes. In the 18th century, Gabrielle Vire du Liron undertook a new transformation of the building, marking a key step in its architectural evolution.

In the mid-19th century, around 1857, the Lacroix-Laval family built the present castle, entrusted to architect Pierre Martin, inspired by medieval and Renaissance styles. This new building, of quadrilateral plan, is distinguished by its scalables, its false mâchicoulis and its round towers, while the outbuildings (farm and concierge) could have been designed by Jean-Prosper Bissuel. The richly decorated interiors include a vaulted chapel, carved panelling and 19th century stained glass windows, reflecting the eclectic taste of the era.

The estate, which was listed as a historic monument in 2007, also includes a park, a enclosed vegetable garden and a fence wall, demonstrating its heritage importance. The castle thus combines a defensive structure inspired by the past with typical 19th-century residential amenities, illustrating the romantic fascination for the Middle Ages. Its hybrid architecture and its history linked to the local aristocracy make it a remarkable example of the Ardèche heritage.
