Origin and history

The Château de Montivert, located in Baugé-en-Anjou in the Pays de la Loire, is a neo-Gothic building built between 1893 and 1895 by architect Laffilée for Charles Renouf du Breil, lawyer in Angers. This castle is inspired by the Angevin residences of the time of King René, marking the end of the neo-Gothic period in France. The stone sculptures were made by Hippolyte Oger, those on wood by André, and the stained glass windows, signed Delon Paris, date back to 1895 and 1901. The park preserves remains of a former 16th century mansion, partially destroyed during the construction of the present castle.

The castle was listed as historical monuments in 1994 for its architectural and heritage interest. It replaces an earlier manor house with only one tower remaining, the other parts having been demolished in 1895. Private property, it illustrates the taste of the Angevin bourgeoisie of the late 19th century for revisited historical styles, combining medieval references and modern comfort.

Located 4.2 km southwest of Baugé, on the old town of Vieil-Baugé, the Château de Montivert is distinguished by its stylistic eclecticism and its integration into a landscaped park. The artisans who contributed to its decoration (sculptors, glassmakers) testify to the collaboration between Parisian artists and provincial sponsors, characteristic of the period.
