Origin and history

The Château de Montus, located in Castelnau-Rivière-Basse in the Hautes-Pyrénées, was the heart of an active parish from the 14th century until the French Revolution. This site, formerly linked to a chapel today gone, illustrates the religious and agricultural importance of the region, marked by a long wine tradition. Locally produced wines were then exported and appreciated to the Netherlands, demonstrating their quality and reputation.

The decline of viticulture in the 19th century gradually transformed the estate, whose cellar – the central part of the farm yard – was preserved for its characteristic architecture. This elongated building, protected by a embankment and a hillside, has a facade rhythmized by symmetrical openings surrounding a monumental gate. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1988 for its facades, roofs and gate, it now embodies the rural and wine heritage of Occitanie.

The land of Montus, historically dedicated to the vine, reflects the evolution of the agricultural and economic practices of the region. The gradual abandonment of viticulture to other cultures or uses marks a major transition in local history, while the conservation of the cellar recalls the medieval and modern heritage of the estate. The site, although partially transformed, remains a tangible testimony of this past.
