Origin and history

The Château de Montvallat has its origins in the 14th century as a strong house, but its current structure dates mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. Reconstructed in the 16th century, it was attacked during the Wars of Religion and burned in 1610. This monument, located in Chaudes-Aigues in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, illustrates the defensive architecture of the period, with its granite walls and fortification elements such as mâchicoulis and schauguettes.

From 1612, Francis II, Count of Montvallat, undertook a reconstruction and fortification of the castle, giving it its current quadrilateral form. The main house, residential, contrasts with the parts dedicated to rural exploitation. Around 1630, an Italianizing painted decor, inspired by contemporary engravings, was added to the interior, representing flowers, fruits, mythological scenes and landscapes, bringing an unexpected artistic touch to this austere home.

The castle has been classified as historic monuments since 8 September 2000, recognizing its heritage value. Its protected elements include the entrance chestnut, fountain, terraces and gardens. This monument bears witness to the architectural transformations and artistic influences of its time, while preserving traces of its defensive and agricultural past.
