Origin and history

Mortiercrolles Castle, located in the commune of Saint-Quentin-les-Anges in Mayenne (region Pays de la Loire), is an emblematic building of the 15th and 16th centuries. It has been listed as a historical monument since 1924, with protected elements such as its facades, roofs, enclosure and ruins of its chapel. The castle is renowned for its two tower portal, richly decorated windows and elegant chapels, reflecting the architecture of its time.

The monument is closely linked to the seigneury of Haut-Anjou and the Barony of Craon, historically dependent on the Angers seine floor. In the Middle Ages and under the Old Regime, he played a central role in this region, then under an angeline influence. The castle is also famous for having been the residence of notable figures such as Pierre de Rohan-Gié, Marshal of France, and his descendant Anne de Rohan, born there.

Saint-Quentin-les-Anges, where the castle stands, is a rural town in the south of Mayenne, marked by a dominant agricultural occupation (arable land, meadows). Its history is linked to that of Anjou, and its name pays homage to Saint Quentin, martyr of the third century. Mortiercrolles Castle, with its enclosure and outbuildings, bears witness to the strategic and social importance of local seigneuries during the Renaissance.

The protected elements of the castle include facades, roofs, enclosure with its entrance door and towers, as well as remains of the chapel. These architectural features, combined with its history of the Rohan family, make it a major heritage site in Mayenne. The region's altered ocean climate has also influenced the conservation of materials over the centuries.
