Origin and history

Le château de Nomazy is a house located in Moulins, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the early 17th century, it has an architecture whose present form of the house dates back to the 18th century. Its entrance gate, dating back to the 17th century, is distinguished by straight feet and an arch in basket handle, topped by an entably decorated with a cornice. This gate, made of sandstone and limestone, is carved with vegetal motifs and crowned with a pediment decorated with a cartridge framed with buttocks.

The castle has been listed as historical monuments since 27 October 1967, specifically for its entrance gate and remarkable architectural elements. Although the initial construction dates back to the early 17th century, the sources point out that the current house was built in the 18th century, reflecting subsequent changes.

The Berger de Nomazy family, originally from Moulins and also based in Paris, is closely linked to this area. Julien Joseph Berger de Ressye (1758-?), king's adviser to the presidial of Moulins, acquired it. His descendant, Jean-Bernard Berger de Nomazy (1800-), perpetuated the family name. Among contemporary figures, General Gabriel Berger de Nomazy (born 1947), former commander of the French nuclear force and director of the Polytechnic School (2000-2005), illustrates the legacy of this lineage.

The estate, though private, embodies the local history of Bourbonnais and the architectural heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries. The protected elements, such as the gate, bear witness to artisanal know-how and baroque aesthetics, typical of the noble residences of this time in Auvergne.
