Origin and history

The castle of Panassou is a sarladais-type mansion, characterized by an irregular house body decorated with shingles windows. Its construction spanned between the 15th and 16th centuries, as evidenced by its contrasting architectural elements. The massive round tower, dated from the 15th century, has a finely carved skylight, while the opposite façade reveals a Renaissance-style door and window, topped by a skylight of the same period. Another window, decorated with Corinthian columns, highlights the artistic influence of this period.

Inside, a staircase with flat pilasters presents carved motifs typical of the Renaissance, illustrating the evolution of decorative tastes between the Middle Ages and modern times. The monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 6 December 1948, thus embodies the architectural transition between two major periods. Its exact address, 1 Cht Panassou in Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse (Dordogne), is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 24510.

The location of the castle, in the Black Perigord, reflects the importance of manor houses in this region in the 15th and 16th centuries. These seigneurial residences served as both places of power, administrative centres for the surrounding lands, and symbols of prestige for their owners. Their architecture often blended defensive elements inherited from the Middle Ages – such as round towers – with more refined decorations inspired by the Italian Renaissance, reflecting the cultural exchanges of the period.

The inscription of the castle of Panassou in 1948 underscores its heritage value, particularly for its protected elements: the medieval tower, the door windows, and the interior decorations. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation), its state of conservation and location make it a representative example of the perigord heritage.
