Origin and history

The castle of Peyrudette is a building built at the end of the 15th century, as attests the lintel of the porch dated 1480. Located in the commune of Champagnat en Creuse (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), it originally belonged to the seigneury of Peyrudette, dependent on the chestnut factory of Aubusson and the county of Marche. The original castle probably consisted of a body of rectangular houses flanked by two round towers to the east, completed by a porch, a chapel and two other towers delimiting the courtyard, all erected during the same construction campaign.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent major alterations in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, gradually transforming it into a recreational residence. In particular, the modifications concerned the interior distribution, organised around a corridor along the facade on the courtyard. The rooms retain remarkable decorative elements, such as woodwork, beams ceilings, and a 19th-century fireplace decorated with sculptures depicting fruit and foliage garlands. The chapel, vaulted with ground ribs, bears witness to the Gothic heritage of the monument.

Ranked among the historical monuments by decree of 2 January 1989, the castle of Peyrudette today protects its facades, roofs, a fountain, retaining walls, as well as interior elements such as the dining room and its fireplace. Although private property, there remains a significant example of the architectural evolution of rural castles between the Middle Ages and modern times.
