Origin and history

The Château de Pierrefonds, located in the Oise in the Hauts-de-France region, is a castle built at the end of the 14th century under the impulse of Louis I of Orléans, Duke of Valois. This medieval monument, designed to monitor exchanges between Flanders and Burgundy, was partially destroyed in the 17th century by order of Louis XIII after having served as a stronghold during the Wars of Religion. His ruins, which became a romantic symbol in the 19th century, attracted the attention of Napoleon III, who entrusted his restoration to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1857.

The reconstruction of the castle by Viollet-le-Duc, between 1858 and 1885, removed the framework of a simple restoration to become a creative reinterpretation of the medieval style, mixing architectural eclecticism and technical innovations of the nineteenth century. The architect incorporated imaginary defensive elements, such as ditches and trenches, while modernizing internal structures with metal frames and heating systems. The castle became an unfinished imperial residence, intended to house Napoleon III's collection of weapons, now exposed to the Invalides.

The castle of Pierrefonds, classified as a historical monument since 1862, illustrates a double identity: that of a medieval fortress, marked by its eight towers dedicated to the Nine Preux, and that of an imperial palace of the Second Empire, where Viollet-le-Duc gave free rein to his imagination. The room of Preuses, the chapel, and the imperial apartments bear witness to this mixture of Gothic heritage and neo-medieval creativity. Since 2021, the castle is a national domain and continues to fascinate with its history and hybrid architecture.

Over the centuries, Pierrefonds has also served as a stage for film and television productions, such as Le Capitaine Fracasse (1961) or L'École du bien et du mal (2022). Today, the monument attracts visitors for its architectural heritage and temporary exhibitions, while being the subject of restoration campaigns, such as the one completed in 2024 on the Preuse wing.

The story of Pierrefonds is also that of its owners and architects: Louis d'Orléans, who made it a strategic fortress, to Napoleon III and Viollet-le-Duc, who made it a symbol of medieval renewal in the 19th century. The 19th century archaeological excavations and the writings of collaborators such as Lucjan Wyganowski documented this transformation, making the castle a unique testimony to the architectural and political evolutions of France.
