Gonon de Pierregrosse - Historical figure Associated with the castle between 1415 and 1461.

Origin and history

The Château de Pierregrosse is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Alban-d'Ay, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is distinguished by its immediate proximity to the château des Rieux, from which it is separated only by the creek of Embrun. Its name comes from a huge rock that still constitutes a part of its foundations today, highlighting its remarkable geological anchoring in the local landscape.

In the 15th century, the archives mention Gonon de Pierregrosse, a figure associated with the castle, who lived between 1415 and 1461. Although the details of his exact role or actions remain limited in the available sources, his presence attests to a noble or seigneurial occupation of the site at that time. The castle, like many similar buildings in Vivarais, is part of a network of fortifications and aristocratic residences marked by the political and social dynamics of the late Middle Ages.

The architecture of the castle, although little detailed in the current sources, seems related to its natural environment, with the rock as a structural element. The bibliographical references, like the book Les Châteaux historiques du Vivarais (1914) by Florentin Benoît-d'Entrevaux, suggest a local importance, but precise descriptions of interior spaces or amenities are lacking. The site nevertheless participates in the heritage history of the Ardèche, illustrating the defensive and residential strategies of regional elites.
