Origin and history

Poinsac Castle, located in Coubon in Haute-Loire, has its origins at the end of the 14th century. In 1390, an authorization was granted to build his dungeon, while an undefendable house already existed on site. This first building marks the beginning of a long architectural history, punctuated by major transformations in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries.

During the reign of Louis XIII, the castle suffered a fire in retaliation against its lord, joined to the cause of the Duke of Orleans. After this destruction, the estate was restored, and then thoroughly redesigned in the 18th century. The work of this period affected the western facade and introduced interior decorative elements of Louis XIV style, such as woodwork and stucco. Additional improvements were made at the beginning of the 20th century.

The dungeon, the medieval heart of the castle, houses a room with a painted 15th century ceiling, surmounted by a defensive floor and a round road on mâchicoulis. Other spaces keep traces of the different eras: a 15th-century fireplace decorated with buttocks and frames, an entrance hall and an 18th-century stairwell decorated with stuccos and cariatids, or a large living room with woodwork and gypsies. These elements reflect the architectural and artistic evolution of the monument.

Ranked as historical monuments by decree of 6 April 1987, Poinsac Castle illustrates both the feudal heritage of the region and the stylistic influences of the following centuries. Its strategic location, on a plateau dominating Coubon and the Loire, reinforces its historical and landscape importance in the Haute-Loire department.
