Origin and history
Pompignac Castle is a medieval building built in 1342 by the Count of Armagnac, in the present municipality of Val d'Arcomie, in the department of Cantal. Originally linked to the family of Armagnac, he was assigned in 1380 to the family of Pompignac, who gave him his present name. This castle, typical of the 14th century fortifications, reflects the political and military stakes of the period in the Margeride region, then under feudal influence.
In 1790, the castle underwent major changes, including the destruction of two turrets and the suppression of the round path, reflecting post-Revolution architectural and social changes. These changes mark an adaptation to the new standards of comfort and safety, while partially erasing its original defensive character. The plan of the castle, structured around a large rectangle with opposite turrets, reveals a typical internal organization, including vaulted rooms and large chimneys.
Ranked a historic monument in 1941, Pompignac Castle illustrates the architectural evolution of castles in France, from a military function to a preserved heritage. Its inscription bears witness to its historical and cultural value, while stressing its role in the local history of Cantal and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The presence of latrines and a staircase in the turrets shows particular attention to daily life in this type of fortress.
