Origin and history

The neo-classical Pont-Chevron castle was built between 1896 and 1900 by the architects Coulomb and Chauvet for Count Louis d'Harcourt. Inaugurated in July 1900, it replaced a medieval castle demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, which remains a stone bridge linking an island from the pond to the shore. The building, consisting of a body of elongated houses with an oval rotunda, has facades adorned with frontons, garlands and bosses, while the interior features a decorated hall and a false marble dining room.

In 1962, two Gallo-Roman mosaics of the second century, probably from thermal baths, were discovered near the marshes of the castle. Their study raised questions about the identity of a portrayed portrait. Between 1946 and the 1960s, the park hosted the Scouts de France for national camps. Since 1983, a museum has exhibited the history of the castle and mosaics, partially renovated in 2008 for a family audience.

Partially classified as historical monuments in 1987 (facades, roofs, hall, stairwell, dining room and fireplace of the living room), the castle now belongs to the family of La Rochefoucauld. He hosted personalities such as Amélie d'Orléans, Queen of Portugal, and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The estate includes French-style gardens, a rose garden, a vegetable garden and the ruins of the castle on an island of the pond.

The site, open to the public, highlights its architectural and archaeological heritage, while preserving its history linked to the French nobility and Scout movements. The communes, organised around a courtyard with stables and sheds, complete this emblematic set of Loiret.
