Origin and history

The Château de Pouzeux, located on Rue Parmentier in Yzeure (Allier), is an emblematic building of the Bourbon Renaissance. Built in the 16th century, it was initially characterized by two houses in square, accompanied by two pavilions. Today, there is only one Renaissance pediment to the west, a door to the south and a turret, bearing witness to its original architecture. The estate was acquired in 1569 by Gabrielle de Lévis, wife of Honoré d'Urfé, governor of Bourbonnais, who donated it to the town of Moulins in 1604 to establish a Jesuit college.

The legacy could not succeed, and the castle was finally sold to the Jesuits in 1634 by Jean-Claude de Lévis. In 1947, the castle was listed as a historical monument, and it retains remarkable architectural elements, such as its pediment and turret, while evoking the religious and aristocratic history of the region. His 1675 drawing reveals a larger structure, partially disappeared today, but whose remains still illustrate the prestige of the past.

The Château de Pouzeux embodies the social and cultural transformations of Bourbonnais between Renaissance and modern times. Linked to figures such as Honoré d-Urfé, author of L-Astrée, and to the Jesuits, he reflects the educational and political issues of his time. Its inscription in 1947 underscores its heritage value, while its location in Yzeure, near Moulins, makes it a key witness to local history.
