Origin and history
The castle of Prats is an 18th-century building located in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Prats, Dordogne (New Aquitaine). Located on the right bank of the Dordogne, it overlooks the river facing Juillac (Gironde). This castle, a private property, has been listed as historical monuments since 1963 for its facades and roofs.
The present, rectangular, east-west-oriented home was transformed in the late eighteenth century. Its southern façade, which was rebuilt in the early 19th century, features a central portal with four doric columns surmounted by a triangular pediment, typical of the Palladian style. The communes, located in the northeast and east, retain Mansart roofs as well as four windows dating from the initial construction (late 16th - early 17th century).
The estate is lined with Empire-style grids, and its access is made by three portals framed by stone pillars attributed to the Restoration period (early 19th century). Inside, a decorated vestibule crosses the ground floor, while the ionic capitals of the central peristyle contrast with the older architectural elements. The castle thus illustrates several epochs, from 17th century communes to post-revolutionary developments.
Ranked a historic monument in 1963, Prats Castle embodies the architectural evolution of a noble residence in Périgord, between late medieval heritage and neoclassical influences. Its strategic location, dominating the Dordogne, also reflects its historical role in the local landscape, both residential and symbolic.
