Tax collector for Turenne Viscount.
Origin and history
The castle of Puymèges, attested from the thirteenth century, was initially linked to the collection of taxes in the Viscounty of Turenne. Remnants such as a defensive tower and a precinct wall testify to its past importance. Architectural traces suggest a significant extent of original constructions, although partially modified thereafter.
From the end of the 17th century, the castle moved to a resort residence, with renovations opening the building largely on the outside. These transformations continued in the 19th century, marking an adaptation to the tastes and uses of successive epochs. The central body, built at the end of the sixteenth century, includes a two-storey building overlooking an entrance vault, flanked by a screw staircase and extended by low wings housing houses and cellars.
The interior decor, characteristic of the eighteenth century, and the garden built in the second half of the same century reflect the influence of classical styles. The park, structured around landscape elements (fontaines, aviaries, orangery) and part of the 19th century outbuildings, was partially protected by a 1990 order. This includes the portal, washhouse, and factories, highlighting the heritage value of the ensemble.
The precise address, located in Puymege Haut in the municipality of Brive-la-Gaillarde (Corrèze), enjoys a geolocalised location considered very satisfactory. The castle thus illustrates a historical stratification, mixing medieval heritage, Renaissance and Baroque adaptations, and modern amenities, typical of noble residences in Limousin.
