Origin and history

The Château de Recourse is a castle in ruins located in the commune of Beaulieu, in the department of Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The remains are about 1 km north of the village, at the top of a sugar offering stunning views of the Loire valley and the Empblavez plain. This strategic site suggests a defensive and monitoring role for the region.

The castle was first mentioned in 1273 by Armand Vicomte de Polignac, then again in 1307 and 1310 by his successors. These references indicate a feudal occupation related to the Polignac family. In 1527, the residents of Recourse undertook to monitor the castle, which is proof of its continuing importance, though declining. The last mention dates from 13 July 1557, when the lord of Polignac ceded recourse to his son, probably marking the end of his active use.

At the southern end of the rock remains the foundation of a tower, visible vestige of the old fortress. Today, the site is accessible on a free tour, offering visitors an overview of medieval military architecture and an exceptional panorama of the surrounding landscapes.
