Origin and history

The Château de Renève is a modern building located in Renève, Côte-d'Or, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Although its origins date back at least to the thirteenth century, the present castle was rebuilt in 1750 on the remains of an old strong house, after several destructions, including fires in 1438 and a state of ruin confirmed in 1667. Its current architecture, completed in the late eighteenth century, reflects this late reconstruction, interrupted by the French Revolution.

The first historical mention dates from 1276, when Jean de Vergy, Sénéchal of Burgundy, confirmed the membership of the châtellenie de Renève in the duchy. In 1388, Jeannotte d'Arceau ceded Renève's strong house and outbuildings to Jeanne de Vergy. These transfers of property illustrate the strategic importance of the site, marked by successive conflicts and reconstructions. The present castle, composed of two buildings perpendicular to a round platform surrounded by ancient ditches, preserves traces of this turbulent history.

The ditches, now closed, and the buildings rebuilt from 1750 testify to this development. The main house, with its basement floor and raised ground floor, is flanked by two wings. The communes, restored in 1989, house agricultural outbuildings like a barn and stables. A rectangular pool, isolated to the southeast, and a posterior pavilion in the park complete the whole, reflecting both its residential use and its rural anchoring.

The Château de Renève thus embodies a synthesis between a medieval past marked by conflicts and a modern reconstruction, adapted to the needs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its architecture and history bear witness to the social and political transformations of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, between feudality and contemporary times.
