Origin and history

The Castle of Reyniès, also known as Rayniès or Ragnès, is a monument located in Lavaur, Tarn department, Occitanie region. Since 27 May 1993, it has been listed as a historical monument and stands out from the real Castle of Reyniès, located in Reyniès. Its construction follows a conflict between the family of Reyniès and the consuls of Lavaur (1695-1706), settled by the court of Montauban. The present castle replaces a pre-existing "big house".

According to the Merimée base, the castle was acquired by the bishopric of Lavaur to make it a summer residence of bishops, with the addition of a chapel. However, historian Philippe Cros contests this version, claiming that the Reyniès owned it continuously until the 19th century. He suggests that this confusion would result from a long stay of Lavaur's vicar on the spot.

The castle, of classic style, has a rectangular structure facing east-west, with an outgrowth on one floor east side. An original symmetry is assumed, with traces of a possible outgrowth demolished at the other end. Two cornices highlight windows and roof, while a two-span chapel occupies the west wing. The access is made by two opposite doors, topped by perrons, leading to a main room decorated with a French ceiling and a remarkable fireplace.

Passed in several hands in the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle was bought in 1984 by owners who were anxious to restore its chandelier. Its architecture and history reflect the local tensions and social developments of the modern era in Occitanie.

The architectural description reveals a sober but elegant building, marked by classical elements such as cornices and perrons. The integrated chapel bears witness to religious or seigneurial influence, according to historical interpretations. The debates about its origin (family of Reyniès vs. bishopric) illustrate the complexity of the sources available.

Today, the Castle of Reyniès remains a significant example of the Tarnian heritage, combining local history and classical architecture. Its inscription in the historical monuments in 1993 enshrines its heritage value, while leaving open some questions about its first owners and its original vocation.
