Origin and history

Robien Castle, located in the commune of Foeil in the Côtes-d'Armor (Bretagne), is an 18th-century building built by the Robien family, attested to in the area since 1212. This castle, completed shortly before the French Revolution, is the third built by this line on their ancestral lands. Confiscated as demigrated during the Revolution, he was ransacked and redeemed by a former servant of the family, who restored him to them. A major restoration took place around 1860, giving the castle its original brilliance.

The estate includes architectural and landscape elements protected since 1946: the castle itself, the 18th century stables, a probably contemporary chapel of the castle, as well as surrounding woods and alleys. Inside, the murals were made by painter Joseph Gouézou (1821-1880), adding a significant artistic dimension. The 15th century medieval chapel, ruined during the unrest of the League, has now disappeared, but its existence bears witness to the long-standing nature of the site.

Two prominent figures are linked to this castle: Christophe-Paul de Robien (1698-1756), a Breton historian, naturalist and politician, born in this castle, and Guy de Robien (1857-?), a soldier born there. Their families have marked local history for centuries, since their installation at the Foeil in 1212. The castle, with its semicircular central pavilion and symmetrical facades, illustrates the Breton aristocratic architecture of the late Old Regime.

Ranked a historic monument in 1946, Robien Castle embodies both a preserved architectural heritage and a testimony to the upheavals of the Revolution. Its park, woods and outbuildings form a coherent whole, reflecting the way of life of a noble Breton family throughout the centuries. Today, it remains a symbol of the Côtes d'Armor heritage, open to the discovery of its history and art.
