Origin and history

The Château de Rocheblave is a 16th century building located in the municipality of Ispagnac, in Lozère, overlooking the right bank of the Tarn. Its geographical position allowed it to monitor the entrance of the Tarn gorges and access to the Sauveterre causse, thus playing a strategic role in the control of local communication channels. Accessible from the 907bis road, it is located near the hamlet of Molines, on a site overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Historical property of the family of L'ingenge, Marquis de Cassagnoles (Gard), the castle passed into the hands of their heir, M. de Vergèze d'Aubussargues, in the middle of the eighteenth century. At the end of the 19th century it belonged to Louis Jourdan, MP for the Lozère between 1886 and 1905. These changes in ownership reflect its importance in local history, linked to influential families in the region.

The castle is part of the architectural heritage of the modern era, typical of the defensive and residential buildings of the Renaissance in Occitanie. Its location near the gorges of the Tarn underlines its dual role: military control of the roads and symbol of power for its successive owners. Today, it is one of the emblematic castles of the department of Lozère.
