Origin and history
The Château de Rochebrune is a medieval building located in the commune of Oradour, now attached to Neuveglise-sur-Truyère, in the department of Cantal. Originally, this fortress had a strategic mission to monitor the Epie Valley to alert the lords of Saint-Flour in case of attack. Its architecture preserves major elements of the 12th and 15th centuries, such as a square tower, Romanesque windows and a spiral staircase, reflecting its historical defensive role.
Acquired in 1970 by the Langloÿs family, the castle was renovated from 1974 and opened to the public in 1981. Always inhabited by this family, it offers guided tours highlighting its architectural heritage, including typical rooms of Auvergne feudal architecture (low rooms, knight's room, oratory). The site is also remarkable for its classic terraced garden, a rarity in the Cantal.
Ranked as historical monuments since 10 August 2000, the Château de Rochebrune illustrates both the medieval heritage and the transformations of the 18th and 20th centuries. Its state of conservation and its tourist exploitation make it a notable example of living heritage, combining history, architecture and family transmission. The ensemble also demonstrates the local dynamics of preserving the old building in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
