Origin and history
The castle of Roumare is an emblematic construction of the first half of the 17th century, erected around 1630 by Sanson Vignon, a French parliamentarian. It replaces a medieval building and stands out for its brick, stone and slate architecture. The site, located in the commune of Roumare in the Seine-Maritime, is complemented by a park and outbuildings, reflecting the social status of its successive owners.
In the 18th century, the castle was enlarged with the addition of two lateral wings and a chapel, blessed in 1756. The latter is home to panels painted in grey from the 17th century, reflecting the artistic and religious evolution of the period. Between 1895 and 1910, major works transformed the building again, adapting its spaces to modern needs while preserving its historical character.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 11 April 1997, the castle of Roumare today protects its main building, its outbuildings, its enclosure walls adorned with grids and lions, as well as its park including an old castral mot. These elements illustrate both its medieval past and its transformations in classical and modern times. The site remains a private property, but its registration underscores its heritage importance in Normandy.
The location of the castle, on the road from Bosc Hue to Roumare, makes it a landmark in the local landscape. Its history is closely linked to that of the region, marked by the influence of the Romanian parliamentarians and the evolution of aristocratic residences between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Sources, such as the Flohic editions or the Mérimée base, document its role in the Seine-Maritime architectural heritage.
