Origin and history

The castle of Saint-Julien, located in Cahuzac-sur-Adour in Gers, is an emblematic building of the 1st quarter of the 17th century. It has been a member of the Saint-Julien family since 1606, although its present structure incorporates major changes made in the 18th century. Its architecture is distinguished by a framed facade of two square towers and a headband highlighting the first floor. Access is via a large tree-lined driveway, typical of the Gascon seigneurial residences of the time.

The monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1973, reflects the local history of the Basse River, an area marked by its agricultural and river heritage along the Adour River. The 19th century commons, backed by the west facade, illustrate the evolution of the domestic and economic needs of the owner family. According to the sources, the interior furniture, probably destroyed during the French Revolution, does not retain any element prior to the beginning of the nineteenth century, testifying to the upheavals of this period.

Cahuzac-sur-Adour, a rural commune with 204 inhabitants in 2023, is part of a territory shaped by the Adour and its canal d'Alaric, with a preserved natural heritage (Natura 2000 and ZNIEFF site). The castle, next to the water mill (also classified), embodies the architectural and social heritage of a region where gasconne history and traditional agricultural dynamics blend together.
