Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Loup, located in Saint-Germain-Chassenay in the Nièvre, was built between 1845 and 1848 by architect Louis Visconti. This historic monument is distinguished by its neo-Louis XIII style, combining brick and stone facades, while evoking the volumetric aspect of medieval castles. A private archive maintains plans, elevations and cuts drawn by Visconti, whose activity in the province remains poorly documented.
The castle, fully protected (including its decorations, furniture and park) by a decree of 6 May 1997, reflects a period of architectural renewal in the 19th century. Its park and outbuildings, like the common, are also listed as Historic Monuments. Today, the castle belongs to a private company, but its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
The location of the castle in the Nièvre department is a testament to the influence of Parisian architects in the region. Its eclectic style, combining medieval and classical references, illustrates the romantic trends of the era, where castles became prestige symbols for their owners. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).
