Origin and history

The Château de Saint-Martin-d'Armagnac, located in the eponymous village of Occitanie, is a typical example of Louis XIII Gascon architecture. Built mainly at the end of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its four corner turrets, partially preserved ditches and a well of oblivions still visible. This monument illustrates the adaptation of royal architectural styles to regional specificities, with an influence marked by local traditions.

The estate is surrounded by a park with trees, where various species have been planted over the centuries. The partially preserved communes frame this park, one of which bears the date of 1855, indicating post-construction additions. The castle was classified as Historic Monument in 1979 for its facades, roofs and a remarkable fireplace of the living room, highlighting its heritage importance.

Although the sources do not specify its original use, this type of small castle was often linked to the local nobility or wealthy families of the region. Its light defensive architecture (shaped, turrets) suggests a function both residential and symbolic, reflecting the social status of its owners in the 16th century Gers. The presence of oblivion and ditches also recalls the security concerns of the time, even for secondary residences.

Today, the castle seems to be partially open to the public or used for tourist activities (visits, rentals), although the sources do not detail these aspects. Its state of conservation, considered satisfactory (note 8/10 for location), and its protection under the Historical Monuments make it a valuable witness to the architectural history of the Biscay.
