The facades and roofs of the poterne as well as the vestiges of the enclosure with the facades and roofs of the remaining tower (Box B 360, 361): inscription by decree of 26 August 1981

Origin and history

The Château de Saint-Maurice-Thizouaille is a medieval building located in the department of Yonne, on the same name as Saint-Maurice-Thizouaille, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating from the 14th century, it is a typical example of the defensive architecture of this period, although its current remains only allow a partial understanding of its original structure. Its most notable features include a poterne and a tower that has remained protected as historical monuments since 1981.

The inscription of the castle as historical monuments, which took place by decree of 26 August 1981, specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the poterno, as well as the remains of the enclosure and the tower still standing. These protections aim to preserve the architectural traces of the 14th century, a period marked by social and military tensions in Burgundy. The castle, although partially preserved, bears witness to the strategic importance of local fortifications in the feudal context of the time.

Today, the castle of Saint-Maurice-Thizouaille remains a point of heritage interest in the Yonne, illustrating the role of castles in the territorial organization and the defence of local lords. Its current state, with a location deemed "passable" (note 5/10), reflects the challenges of preserving medieval monuments. No information is available on its accessibility to the public or its contemporary uses, such as visits or accommodation.
