Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Pont, located in the eponymous commune of the Allier department, is a building whose origins date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Mentioned as inhabited in 1676 by the Rouzière family, he underwent major transformations after 1750 under the direction of architect Clement. The latter modernizes or partially reconstructs the structure, giving it architectural features specific to its time.
Sold as a national good in 1792 in the revolutionary context, the castle appeared on the cadastre of 1839, testifying to its sustainability despite the political upheavals. In 1882 about a third of its length was demolished, partially altering its original appearance. Despite this, its facades and roofs, as well as remarkable interior elements, were listed as historic monuments in 1969 and 1990, recognizing their heritage value.
The interior of the castle preserves an exceptionally preserved 18th-century décor, including panelling, carved doors and eight decorated chimneys. Among the protected areas are a staircase, a vestibule with painted hazelnut, a large living room with woodwork and painted hazelnuts, as well as fireplaces with various motifs (medalons, shells, palm trees). These elements illustrate the artistic refinement of the time and the social status of its occupants.
The estate also includes notable outbuildings, such as a wall of enclosure and two dovecotes, listed as historical monuments. The exact address, 9 Route de Brout Vernet à Saint-Pont (Allier), and its Insee code (03252) place this heritage precisely in the Bourbon landscape. Today, although its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its state of conservation and legal protection make it a major witness to local history.
