Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Seurin-d'Uzet is an iconic monument located in the commune of Chenac-Saint-Seurin-d'Uzet, Charente-Maritime. Its history dates back to the 14th century, when the first castle was erected. This site, marked by medieval architecture, bears witness to the strategic and residential importance of castles in this region throughout the centuries.
In 1784, the castle was completely rebuilt under the direction of architect Étienne Massioux. This reconstruction reflects the architectural evolutions and comfort needs of the era, while preserving part of the medieval heritage. This project marks a transition to more modern styles, adapted to the demands of the late eighteenth century.
The castle of Saint-Seurin-d'Uzet is listed as a historical monument by order of 17 August 2012. The inscription also makes it possible to enhance this monument in the historical landscape of Charente-Maritime.
