Origin and history

The castle of Sainte-Fortunade, located in the eponymous commune of the department of Corrèze (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), has its origins in the 15th century. Originally he belonged to the Knights of Tulle, a local noble family. Its medieval architecture, marked by towers, scallop turrets and mâchicoulis, reflects its defensive and seigneurial role. The body of rectangular houses and wings in return, typical of the castles of the period, still dominate the landscape.

In the 19th century, the castle underwent major changes, including drilling and modifications of the upper parts, partially adapting its structure to the tastes of the era. The Fouchers, another line of knights established at Sainte-Fortunade from the 13th century, shared the seigneury with the Tulle, although their influence on the current building remains poorly documented. However, the castle retains notable defensive elements, such as the mâchicoulis square tower located at the corner of the buildings.

In 1952, the town hall of Sainte-Fortunade acquired the castle to install municipal services, offering it a new civil vocation. Since 18 April 1997, it has been listed as historical monuments, protecting its facades and roofs, characteristic of its medieval heritage and subsequent transformations. Today, the monument remains a symbol of local heritage, mixing feudal history and contemporary use.

Architecturally, the castle is distinguished by its powerful volumes punctuated with towers and turrets. The north-east facade, decorated with covered mâchicoulis and two scauguettes, contrasts with the west façade, also provided with mâchicoulis. These defensive elements, combined with the square d'angle tower, bear witness to his military past, while his recent inscription underscores his heritage value.
