Origin and history

The castle of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois came into being in the 14th century, when its dungeon was erected. This monument, located in the current Île-de-France, was profoundly remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries, notably with the addition of commons, covered passage and moat. These transformations reflect the evolution of defensive needs towards residential and aesthetic concerns, typical of the Old Regime.

In the 14th century, the dungeon was the defensive heart of the castle, a symbol of local seigneurial power. The 17th and 18th century changes, including commons and moats, illustrate the adaptation of the site to the aristocratic uses of the period, with spaces dedicated to daily life and receptions. The castle was thus the scene of the life of successive lords, some of whom, like Louis Bénigne François Berthier de Sauvigny, marked local history by their architectural and political ambitions.

The French Revolution marked a turning point for the castle: partially destroyed, it kept only its dungeon and stables. In the 19th century, the site was restored and reinvested, becoming a place of memory for the commune. The dungeon, classified as a Historical Monument in 1923, and the commons, registered in 1961, today bear witness to this rich past, mixing medieval heritage and modern transformations.

The castle is also linked to local historical figures, such as the lords of Liers, vassaux de Montlhéry, or members of the Bertier de Sauvigny family. The latter, intendant of Paris, tried to modernize the castle before the Revolution, a project interrupted by political upheavals. The site, today communal property, thus embodies centuries of history, from medieval origins to contemporary redevelopments.

The nearby cave of Sainte-Geneviève adds a legendary dimension to the site. According to tradition, St.Geneviève caused a miraculous spring to spring there in 448, attracting pilgrims and faithful. This legend, combined with the history of the castle, reinforces the emblematic character of the place in the local and regional heritage.

In the 20th century, the castle was integrated into municipal life, becoming a recreation centre after its restoration in 1985. This change in function illustrates the adaptation of historic monuments to modern needs, while preserving their heritage value. Today, the castle of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois remains a symbol of the genovéfaine identity, between medieval memory and contemporary dynamism.
