Origin and history

The Château de Salles is a medieval building located in the commune of Saint-Germain-de-Salles, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its location, halfway between the village and the old village of Salles (united at Saint-Germain in 1811), highlights its historic role in this rural area. The site, accessible by the departmental road D66, has a typical defensive architecture, with a trapezoidal base and traces of moat.

Originally, the castle was flanked by four corners, of which only the southern tower (the former dungeon) remains today. A portion of a wall still links the main dwelling to the commons, a two-storey building. The name Salles would come from the Latin term sala, meaning "house" or "hotel", perhaps reflecting its residential and seigneurial function as early as the thirteenth century.

The first records of the castle date back to 1265, when Jean de Bourgogne (1231–1268), husband of Agnes de Bourbon, became its owner. The site then passed into the hands of Renaud, Count of Forez, before being acquired in the 16th century by the Peschin family. Jeanne du Peschin, heir of the seigneury, passed the estate on to her husband, Blain de Chauvigny de Blot, whose line of line kept it until the eve of the French Revolution. In 1770 Louis Charles Antoine Girard sold it to the Delayre family. The castle was finally listed as historical monuments in 1947, recognizing its heritage importance.

Historical sources cite local works such as the History of Saint-Germain-de-Salles (Abel Peyronnet, 1977), which document its evolution. The site illustrates the architectural transformations and property changes characteristic of the Bourbon castles, between defensive function, seigneurial residence and agricultural operation.
