Origin and history
The Château de Sance is a historical monument located on the former town of Saint-Martin-d'Arcé, now integrated in Baugé-en-Anjou, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, it was partially rebuilt in the 17th century, while its interiors were redesigned in the 18th century. The building thus illustrates the architectural evolution of Anjou over three centuries, mixing Renaissance and classical elements.
The castle was classified and listed as historical monuments on 14 January 1964. This protection applies specifically to the hall of the large living room, the large living room itself, the office, the staircase, and the facades and roofs of the main building. These preservation measures underline its heritage importance in the Pays de la Loire region.
Located about 5.3 km north of the town of Baugé, the castle of Sancé is part of a landscape marked by feudal and seigneurial history of Anjou. Although the sources do not mention specific historical figures related to its construction or occupation, its architecture reflects the social status of the owners of the era, often from the nobility or the Earth bourgeoisie.
Available data indicate that the castle is referenced in the Merimée database, under Insee code 49018, confirming its anchoring in the local heritage. Its approximate address, 5026 Le Bourg à Saint-Martin-d'Arcé, allows to situate it in a rural environment, typical of the seigneurial residences of the region.
