Origin and history
The Château de Sauvages is a building built in the 16th century on the commune of Beaumont-la-Ferrière, in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is representative of the aristocratic residential architecture of this period, with subsequent modifications to the eighteenth century. This monument illustrates the evolution of the styles and uses of castles between Renaissance and modern times, in an area marked by a strong seigneurial presence.
The castle was erected by Jacques de Morogues in the 16th century, then passed into the hands of Pierre Babaud de la Chaussade, seigneur of Beaumont and several other surrounding fiefs. In 1987, its facades, roofs, as well as certain elements of the estate (square, common, gate and retaining walls) were listed as historical monuments. This protection highlights its heritage and architectural importance.
Available sources, including the work of historian Gaston Gauthier and databases like Mérimée, confirm his local anchoring and his role in the history of Beaumont-la-Ferrière. The castle, still visible today, bears witness to the seigneurial heritage and the social transformations of the region throughout the centuries.
