Origin and history

Sauvagnac Castle is a fortified house built in the 16th century on a barred spur in the municipality of Romagna (Gironde). It replaces a small medieval fortress dating from the late 13th or early 14th century, partially rebuilt in the middle of the 17th century in its upper parts. The site has been known since the 13th century and has belonged successively to several noble families, including the Blagnac, Béarn Grammont, Castéja, Agar, Belcier, Rogier and Montault de Saint-Civier. Its architecture combines defensive elements (fossed, triangular enclosure) and residential (housework with tower).

The monument was listed as a historical monument on 13 October 1992 for its house body, tower, triangular enclosure with door, ditch and fence wall. These protections relate specifically to cadastral plots A 640 to 643. The castle is located in a distance named Sauvagnac, accessible from the village by a communal road crossing the D140, between Faleyras and Bellefond. Its strategic location and history reflect the issues of territorial control in New Aquitaine during the Old Regime.

First medieval fortress, the site evolved into a seigneurial residence in the 16th century, illustrating the transition between defensive castles and pleasure houses. Homeowner families, often linked to local or regional nobility, have marked its history with reconstructions and architectural adaptations. Today, the castle remains a testament to the social and military dynamics of the Gironde between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
