Origin and history

The castle of Ségur is an ancient 13th century castle, whose ruins stand on a rocky spur overlooking the town of Ségur-le-Château, in Corrèze. Built on an older building, it is part of a castral ensemble (castrum) of Carolingian origin, reflecting a medieval organization shared between a seigneurial space and another dedicated to knights. This site was a major stronghold of the Viscounts of Limoges, illustrating their regional power in the Middle Ages.

The 14th century castral chapel is one of the few still standing elements. It was classified as a historic monument in 1840, while the rest of the castle, including walls, floors and the dormant bridge, was protected by a 2005 order and extended in 2015. These protections cover all remains, including terraces, enclosures and adjacent parcels, highlighting the archaeological and historical importance of the site.

Located in a pronounced meander of the Auvézère, the castle overlooks the village, offering a characteristic example of medieval military architecture. Its spatial organization, with a lower courtyard and distinct spaces for the nobility and knights, makes it a rare testimony of feudal structures in Limousin. Today, the site, partly communal and private property, remains a symbol of local heritage.
