Origin and history

The castle of Seneuil is a castle in ruins located in the commune of Saint-Vincent, in the department of Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its remains are about 2 km from the village, on a promontory overlooking the Loire and the hamlet of Cheyrac. A signposted trail provides access to Seneuil's juice, offering views of the remains of the two enclosures and the chapel.

Seneuil was originally a stronghold of the Polignac, one of the oldest noble families in the region. As early as 1030, the site was mentioned as belonging to the lords of Seneuil, vassals of the Polignac. In 1345, the castle resisted an attack by the lord of the Wheel. After the extinction of the Seneuil lineage in the 16th century, the Polignac finally recovered the estate and its lands.

Architecturally, the castle had two separate enclosures. The first, to the north, included a tower with remains in elevation, as well as walls. The second enclosure protected the main buildings and a chapel, now missing. The current ruins make it possible to imagine the strategic importance of the site, controlling the surroundings of the Loire.

Historical sources mentioning Seneuil include works such as historical castles of the Haute-Loire de Jourda de Vaux or the General Armorial of Paul G's Velay. These references highlight his role in local history, linked to the noble families of Polignac and Seneuil, as well as to territorial defence during the Middle Ages.
