Origin and history
Soubeyran Castle is an emblematic monument of Saint-Barthélemy-Grozon, in the department of Ardèche. Although its construction period is not specified, it is known for its 21-hectare park with giant redwoods, adding a remarkable landscape dimension to this historic site.
Hector de Soubeyran de Saint-Prix, judge at the criminal court of the Ardèche, was a notable figure linked to this castle as a member of the department during the French Revolution. This historical link marks the anchoring of the castle in the political upheavals of that time.
In 1947, the castle was acquired by the Ardèche Federation of Lay Works, which established a holiday settlement there. Two years later, in 1949, the site became a secular childhood home, then operating as a medical-pedagogical institute for young people with mild and medium mental disabilities. This transformation reflects its adaptation to the social and educational needs of the twentieth century.
