Origin and history
The castle of Thégra is a historic monument located in Balma, in the department of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. Built mainly in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, it is a typical example of the civil architecture of these periods, with defensive and residential elements. The site was originally a cammas, a set of agricultural buildings organized around a castle, attested by 1370. This configuration reflects the rural and seigneurial organization of the late medieval era, where agricultural estates were often centered on a noble or fortified residence.
The current building owes its construction to Durand d'Abbatia, capital of Toulouse in 1584, which places its major transformation in the Renaissance. The castle consists of two bodies of square buildings, extended by a wing of communes and an octagonal tower housing a spiral staircase. Inside, five rooms retain ceilings painted in the dark, inspired by 17th and 18th century floral motifs, illustrating the evolution of decorative tastes between these two periods. These elements, as well as chimneys and an old sink, contributed to its inscription in historical monuments in 1984.
The castle of Thégra thus embodies both the medieval heritage of Occitan Cammas and the architectural transformations of modern times. Its inscription protects not only its structure, but also remarkable interior elements such as painted ceilings, the chapel and its decorations, or chimneys. These features are a valuable testimony to local history, combining agricultural, residential and symbolic functions over the centuries.
