Origin and history

The castle of Thénières was erected in 1863 by Ernest de Boigne on the site of the former medieval castle of Ballaison, of which no vestige remains. This new building, designed in a romantic style inspired by the Scottish castle of Balmoral, is distinguished by a high round tower and turrets. It offers stunning views of Lake Geneva from the northwest edge of Mount Boisy.

In 1811 Ernest de Boigne acquired the site from the Genevois Jean Lasserre, before having the medieval ruins razed in 1863 to build the present castle, designed by architect Bruger. The building changed hands in 1893 when the Boigne family sold it to Mr.Côte, a Lyon banker, and then moved on to the Domanges family.

Since 1979, the château has been owned by the Bas Chablais intermunicipal trade union. After restoration, it hosted various public bodies, including the Regional Centre for Continuing Education and an annex to the departmental library. Today, it is home to the services of the Thonon Agglomeration Community and its Intercommunal Centre for Social Action (CIAS).
