Origin and history

The castle of Théribus, located in Mesnil-Théribus in Oise, was built in the early seventeenth century for a younger member of the Mornay family, close to Montmorency and the Croq. This estate, enlarged with pavilions and a grid decorated with the figure "M", reflects the influence of the local aristocracy. The park, originally designed in French with charmilles and buis, was remodeled in English in 1826, keeping quadrennial aisles in the adjacent wood. The dovecote, with its clay bolts and rotating ladder, bears witness to the agricultural practices of the period.

The interiors of the castle, the independent chapel, the commons and the vegetable garden kept their primitive distribution. The domain passed from the Mornays, a member of which became bishop of Quebec without ever going there, to the Beauvaisian bourgeoisie (Foy de Morcourt, Serpe, etc.), often linked to the textile trade or to the judiciary. During the Revolution, the Serpe family will hide some clerics in the cellars.

In the 20th century, the castle was occupied by American troops in 1944-1945, leaving the estate in poor condition. Subsequently restored, it was included in the inventory of historical monuments in 2007 for its architecture, park and wood, illustrating four centuries of social and landscape history of the regional elites, from the Mornay to the Choppin of Janvry.
